However, some current readers may not be familiar with the earliest samples of my work, which began as part of a small Tumblr blog.
"Generation Why" is a reboot of my very first comic strip, which was titled "Existentia Academica." It ran in Ball State University's Daily News, and even earned a Winner's Circle Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association during its time in print.
It was very similar to what I am doing now, but there were some notable differences, such as:
- Ellison didn't start out wearing his trademark yellow shirt.
- Daniel Barrett had blonde hair.
- Sarah was (gasp!) Caucasian, and much more butch-looking in her character design. Later posts in this series will allow you to see just how butch she looked.
Still, I think "Existentia" was an important part of my artistic evolution. Without it, the website and "Gen Why" would never have existed.
